On the surface, Lux might appear more like a difficult scholarly quiz rather than a new popular music record from an artist whose previous single featured a global K-pop icon. Broken into four distinct sections and sung in 13 languages, this is a breathtaking symphonic album exploring female mystique, religious ascent, and bodily change, often through the perspective of various saintly figures. The end of a relationship—a theme treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot upwards here, supported by the constant sound of a major orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer among a vast list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity alone makes the work of contemporary artists appear quite laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that this album manages to avoid dry intellectual chin-stroking feels nearly miraculous, and full praise going to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time album to blend historical sounds and the present, its scale feel far higher here, with the tightrope walk more precarious.
